It's funny: There is so much pressure in high school to continue your education and decide what you want to do with the rest of your life, but graduating college is a completely different story. The pressure to succeed is still present, but the confusion is much, much greater. The possibilities seem endless, but the only thing you can even think of doing is curling up in a blanket burrito and watching everything Netflix has to offer. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the post-grad slump.
The best way that I can break down what to do in this black hole of procrastination and despair is by asking a question: Do you know what you want to do next?
If the answer is yes, you're in luck because there are quite a few things you can do to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and move on. Mourn the end of crazy frat parties and optional classes (they were all optional to you, anyway). It's time to make moves towards the next step.
One thing you can do is make a list of everything you want to accomplish, and then break that list down into small steps. For example, if you know you want to go to graduate school, make a list of programs that you are interested in, request information from each school, and write out the requirements for each school. If your goal is to obtain a full-time job, the obvious answer is to fill out applications, but there are other things you can be doing, such as networking events or open hiring days at companies.
If your answer was no, fear not because there is still hope! The first step is thinking about what you actually enjoy doing, and figure out where to go from there. If you aren't sure yet, try looking up what other people with your degree are doing, and try doing a few of those things to find a good fit. For example, as a psychology major, I've worked as a research assistant in a lab and I've volunteered at a day camp for kids with special needs. This gave me an idea of the different routes I could go with a psych degree, and helped me narrow my options.
So hang in there, friends. Life has its highs and lows, and consider this time in your life to be one of those lows. But don't forget, there's no where left to go but up!
