The sensation that has been sweeping the nation: Pokemon Go. Whether you are a hater or a lover of the game, you have definitely seen at least fifty people playing the game. Basically, players can catch the adorable to terrifying creatures on their phones. But for the first time, this is a popular game that requires hardcore nerd to actually (gasp) walk outside! People have already commented heavily on the negative effects that Pokemon Go have had on society, but I am here to stand up for the game of the year
First of all, being involved the game’s community is amazing. Almost every celebrity, from Chrissy Teigan to Justin Bieber have been obsessed by the game. Since you have to stand by certain areas to have achievements and get supplies, you obviously will see number of different players there. In all of my experiences, everyone is super excited to share what they have found and very friendly. This is the first time I have ever seen a video game so actively connect people.
Health benefits is another positive thing that has come with playing Pokemon Go. As previously mentioned, this is something that gets a lot of the players outside into the real world. Pokestops, places where players can refuel on supplies, are actual landmarks, usually with a description of the place, of which you have to be within about 10 yards of to interact. Also players can win eggs during certain levels and Pokestops, in which players can walk to power egg incubators to hatch said eggs. And it is not like you only walk a few steps. Egg ranges can be from 2, 5, and 10 kilometers, depending on which ones you get. Obviously, the more valuable the egg, the higher the walking time. So in order to be the very best, you must walk a lot.
Another beautiful aspect stemming from this game is the wide audience. Grandparents to grandchildren have been able to play this game. A lot of the common and popular games in the industry are usually targeted to a narrow, pre-teen/young adult audience with a thirst for gore and violence. As someone who enjoys gameplay of violent games, it is easy to see why they sell so well. Pokemon, however, is free and accessible to all with Android and Apple systems (which, honestly, is most of the gaming world’s audience anyways). It is without bloody violence, the colors and tone are very positive, and it is a challenge in physical health as well as expanding deterity. Opening this game to such a wide audience is not only a smart business move, but is a great way to expand the game globally.
Lastly, but not least, is the nostalgia this game has brought to many people, bringing fans of the Pokemon show and the original Pokemon video games to life. The joy of being able to play as an active character in the thing that you were so entrenched in as a child is a wonderful use of our technology. In a time where there is so much negativity, this brings a truly positive light to the darkness.
