Music has an influence on every single person in the world. There is a truth that you need to know in the music world. The pop music of today is purely for selling, while rock throughout time has always been for the soul. We see all over the media who the newest pop sensation is and their "new music." You know what goes under the radar, rock, and I'll tell you why.
Most pop songs of today are just a basic computerized beat followed by a half naked woman dancing in a music video singing the same lines over and over again. Then we have rock musicians who put their blood, sweat, and tears into their music and who do they lose out to... the girl who flaunts her body on stage. Now I will add a disclaimer: not all pop is bad, I am just referring to many of the pop stars today. Michael Jackson was a fantastic performer and singer and I have a ton of respect for Adele and her singing abilities as well.
Now these pop stars aren't to blame, I bet most of them are extremely nice men and women. It's the record companies and the marketing team for these people that we need to be mad at. They created the perfect formula for creating the perfect pop star and creating a ton of money.
They took an attractive person (musical experience not required) gave them scandalous clothes and then they added a basic beat. Then a person who wrote crappy and repetitive lyrics is mixed in and then finally millions of dollars worth of advertising and, voila, a pop star who just grossed you at least 20 times your cost.
Then we have an actual band, with amazing skill and passion for music who have to tour all year round and sell merchandise to hopefully make a profit. Luckily most bands who made it with a record company was able to make a profit, some mightier than others. According to Ultimate Guitar, top selling bands like the Foo Fighters gross on average a million dollars per show, which is fine with me because they put all their hearts into their music. Dave Grohl helped write music for Nirvana and then wrote lyrics for the Foo Fighters. Imagine how long it took Grohl to get to where he is today, from 1990-2016 (26 years).
Unfortunately most signed bands don't make nearly that much. Jack Conte of Pomplamoose went into detail in his discussion on how much money his band actually made on tour after expenses. Pomplamoose finished their 28-day tour actually losing about $11,000.
It just frustrates me that lyrics like:
"This dude named Michael used to ride motorcycles
D*** bigger than a tower, I ain't talking about Eiffel's
Real country a** n****, let me play with his rifle... " —Nicki Minaj, Anaconda
Are being played on repeat while lyrics like:
"Ah-oh, The movie in my head is dragging on
Turn it off and we’ll shut in on the songs that play
In your heart like screams in caves
And talks that stay ‘till dark turns into oncoming today
You want a friend for life just listen to me" —Polar Bear Club, Screams in Caves
are being shoved underneath the carpet. We have "Anaconda," which talks blatantly about this guy's genitals, while "Screams in Caves" is about a guy struggling with alcoholism. I'll give you one guess which one of these two artists has a net worth of around 75 million dollars.
People, open up and understand your money is being wasted on garbage lyrics and women objectifying themselves. At this point, you might as well just watch porn. I have no idea who would take a second loan on their house to go see pop stars like this perform in giant venues where you can't even see them. As for me, I'd rather listen to some underground artists or spend 30-50 bucks and see some of my favorite bands up close on the floor of a smaller venue.
Pop today is only for profit. Make things sexual and "attractive" and other people will follow in your footsteps and objectify themselves the same way. Sell the animatronic beat with lyrics as meaningful as dumping garbage on your mother's bed for her birthday. Don't help the musician buy a car for themselves or save up for their kids' college.
Nowadays hard working musicians don't thrive in the music industry anymore... I guess it's all about sex now, and it's a damn shame.
