The brilliantly talented artist, Prince, died in his home in Chanhassen, Minn. on April 21 at the devastatingly young age of 57. Yvette Noel-Schure, his publicist, confirmed his death but did not release the cause, leaving many heartbroken fans seeking answers. According to the Carver County Sheriff, they responded to the emergency call around 9:43 a.m. and found Prince unconscious in the elevator. They tried to revive Prince using CPR, but unfortunately, Prince passed away at 10:07 a.m.
Earlier last week, Prince's plane had to make an emergency landing which, according to his publicist, was because he had the flu. However, according to TMZ, Prince was treated with a "save shot," which is a treatment for a drug overdose. Speculation still stands on the legitimate reason for the emergency landing. Prince also had to cancel two of his shows in Atlanta.
An autopsy of Prince's body was scheduled for the day after his death. However, it is said that it could be days or weeks before the examination is complete. This news leaves many fans anticipating the results.
The love for this hugely influential pop star is seen through various tributes to the amazing artist. Hundreds of people gathered outside his home to memorialize him, and many of his fellow pop stars paid tribute through social media, such as Katy Perry and Elton John. Several cities also lit up some of their landmarks with the color purple in honor of Prince. Los Angeles City Hall, The Forum, Target Field and the Mercedes-Benz Superdome were just some of the many locations that were illuminated by Prince's favorite color.
Even President Obama honored Prince by stating "Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent. As one of the most gifted and prolific artists of our time, Prince did it all...He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer...nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative."
It was extremely clear that Prince was a one-of-a-kind musician. He transcended the boundaries of music, from his eclectic style of music to his androgynous fashion statements. Prince won seven Grammy Awards, along with one Academy Award for his song "Purple Rain." Prince was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and gave a performance of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," that was just as unforgettable as he is.
The loss of Prince is horrific and devastating, but his legacy will continue to influence music forever, and he will be greatly missed.
