One thing has a 90 percent success rate of linking Millennials together: Pokémon. A majority of us tore open packs of trading cards, brandished Poké Balls, and wept during "Pokémon: The First Movie." Many continued to embrace the Poké lifestyle by eagerly sliding "Pokémon" game cards in their Nintendo DS's. Some, on the other hand, still cherish their Pokémon connections but retired their trading cards to collector’s albums in the backs of their closets.
There is another faction that exists: those who never understood the hype. If it isn't already obvious, I fall directly into this category. When I was five, my sisters pranced around the house with sizable stacks of Pokémon trading cards as I re-watched my Scooby-Doo VHS for the millionth time. To be blunt, the extent of my knowledge consisted of the Pokémon movie preview I was forced to watch when I rewound my Scooby-Doo tape too far back. Unfortunately, I missed the prime time to dabble in the magic that is Pokémon.
Now, things are about to change. Those of us who never embraced the obsession now have the opportunity to engage in Pokémon culture without feeling like we missed out. Almost anyone is capable of playing "Pokémon GO," even with little to no knowledge of the video game based franchise. If the Pokémon aspect doesn’t hook you, the game itself will.
Some may argue that this newfangled app is just another reason for youngsters to be glued to their phones, but I beg to differ. This app is highly interactive — it gives users an incentive to go outside and explore their community. By looking at the thousands of reviews already piling up in the app store, it’s evident that people of all ages are grabbing their friends and gallivanting around town with the same zeal they felt when they showcased rare cards in their elementary school playground.
The coolest aspect of this app is that it brings us closer to the future of gaming. Game makers are making it easier for average gamers to convert their dreams into reality. Rather than sitting in front of a screen and twiddling their thumbs for hours on end, participants are motivated to discover a world of possibilities in their own backyards.
