Poetry kills time and even Anxiety

A little bit of poetry can help with that anxiety.

Poetry kills time and even Anxiety
By: Evelyn Zuniga

I was walking into my high school biology class for an exam but I started feeling different. I got up, asked to be excused and left to the girls restroom before the bell rung. I quickly started worrying and overthinking about my exam. My breathe started rapidly increasing as I speed walked to the restroom. I was scared, like I couldn't breathe, trembling uncontrollably and my legs were getting numb. Luckily, my friend came running after me and I sat on the restroom floor. I had my first anxiety attack that day. It didn't make sense to me, how one minute I felt great and the next like I couldn't breathe. Obviously, anxiety attacks would become common by my senior year. Like several of my classmates, I felt I had no time to do anything. I was up and down all the time and one day, I began theorizing of ways to put my stress somewhere else. I began thinking about a diary, but I'm not the type of person to keep a diary, so I chose poetry instead.

Reading Poetry in the Age of Anxiety

Time is Stressful

Think about it. What is one thing that we don't think about that always gets us, people anxious? Time! Whether we have an abundant amount of it or not enough of it, we stress over it and try to control it with our plans, ideas and even actions. We are so focused on the materialistic things in our lives that we forget to just be there, somewhere, or anywhere and enjoy it. Several people believe time is an illusion or something people created and if so, we create our own stress believing there is a time. Stress does not go away, and to be a healthy human being stress is necessary every once in awhile for stimulation purposes. Yet, we continue to stress over the stress that is stressing us out.

Poetry helped me understand a little more about time. When I have to much of it or even not enough of it, instead of worrying about what I need to do for the whole day, I try to relax and just enjoy a few minutes of doing nothing. I read and watch other people's poetry too. As humans, we like to relate to others around us and poetry helps to nourish our soul in this situation; knowing that we are not alone helps. Many cases are different but this is one way I coped with my anxiety.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
