A Poem on National Unrest
keranews

In our recent days our country has faced

Countless tragedies that can’t ever be erased.

From terrorism and violence, protests and shootings

It’s no surprise that our nation is moving

Towards a state of unrest, nowhere close to our best

And where everyone’s just wondering what’s next.

It seems like we can’t go a week without hearing

About police taking actions, taking lives and disappearing

Out of the public eye, trying to lay low and hide

So they aren’t the next victims of a mass call for suicide.

The media keeps pushing that cops keep rushing

To judgements that often are fatal.

But that’s how they are trained, to aim and face blame

And do what it take to KEEP US SAFE.

And so in my mind, though my age may make me blind,

I think our fight’s not against those who protect us.

Not all cops are good, sure some are downright bad

But without them we all could easily be dead.

They keep law and order so that we can survive

So that we can prosper, so that we can thrive.

If we attack them and take their authority,

America will regress, we won’t improve to where we could be.

But if our fight’s not against the ones with the guns

Then who is responsible for this so-called war we’ve begun?

I don’t think I’m alone in my thoughts on placing blame

On the people making villains of every cop with a name.

The media, social networks, and even Black Lives Matter

Promote EVERY TRAGEDY like it’s the first one in history!

They glamourize murder, they popularize crime

They turn the smallest disagreements into America’s greatest divide.

Always jumping to conclusions, accusing with no facts,

They incite the public to take part in blind acts.

“Books are the carriers of [our] civilation”

So pick up some Thoreau or King before you make some half-hearted declaration.

Nowadays people hardly know why they’re marching.

They just want to keep up with groups that are parting

Ways with the mainstream, the way things used to be,

Used to be in history, to create a world for you and me

Better than the older one and brighter than the morning sun.

But the sad truth is, IT CAN’T BE DONE!

A perfect society cannot exist.

Hatred and violence will always persist.

It’s the curse of the fallen world that we live in,

And it won’t stop until we stop livin’.

And so the one solution to our problems and our pain

Is to switch up the tune to the song that we’ve sang.

If we promote positivity and stop the insane

Idea that ALL whites hate blacks and vice versa just the same,

We might catch a glimpse of how our world should be,

Just like it was before the time of Adam and Eve,

Achieving the ideals of life, liberty and prosperity.

Only together can we ever see change.

If we’re divided, we fall; it’ll be our nation that WE hang.

But if there has to be some semblance of dissidence,

Keep in mind the terms of Civil Disobedience.

Unjust laws and systems should be altered,

But by proper means, with no wars or martyrs.

Change the rules while obeying the rules,

Discussion and peace are our best tools.

Our call is simple, and our charge is this:

To lay down our guns, ease the words from our lips,

Stand side by side, as brothers and sisters not slaves and masters

And sing “Glory to God” because ALL LIVES MATTER.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
