I’ve grown to hate numbers lately
No, I'm not just talking about calculus, but numbers in general
We define ourselves by numbers
“Oh I'm in the top ten of my class”
“I have a 4.6 GPA”
That’s a great accomplishment,
but how many hours of sleep did you lose to get that?
That seems to be a more important number to me
Those 6 letters listed down your report card,
they merely represent a number-
a classification of how well you performed on a few tests
Do they really tell you all that much?
Some people would say yes.
I say no
Those comments next to the letters,
Does anyone read them? Or even care what they say?
Chances are you gloss over them while you skim down the line
counting your As and Bs
Desperately trying to figure out what this will mean for your future
I got three Bs this term,
That is more Bs than I've gotten the rest of my school career combined
What those numbers don't tell you
Is that I became a national champion last term
They don't tell you that I had trouble getting out of bed,
let alone open a math book
I let go of the numbers lately
Im choosing to not let them define me
I hope you can do the same.
