Recently, I've started to really get into podcasts. All kinds of podcasts, whether they be rants, spoken documentaries, or stand up comedy bits. I listened to a couple of episodes of one called Limetown, which is an investigative report on the mysterious disappearance of over 300 men, women and children at a neuroscience research facility in Tennessee, and it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that the podcast was fictional and no such disappearance ever took place. To save you the trouble of researching interesting podcasts to listen to, and to avoid you making the same mistake I did, here is a list of podcasts you should hear and some information about what they are about.
1. 99% Invisible
This podcast sheds some light on the things in this world that we generally don't think about. Its goal is to explain the unseen or overlooked aspects of design, architecture, and activity in the world and goes into depth on the history behind each aspect.
2. This American Life
The theme of this podcast changes each episode, and there are a variety of stories on that theme. The episodes can be humorous, sad, scary or heartwarming. They often have to do with human nature, and most of the stories are journalism or stories told in first person narrative format.
3. The Read
On The Read, Kid Fury and Crissle give listeners their humorous take on pop culture, current events, and today's celebrities. Their witty banter and blunt opinion-giving is a fun way to catch up on what is going on in the celebrity world.
4. Serial
Serial is an investigation on the 1999 murder of 18 year old Hae Min Lee in Baltimore, Maryland. Lee's ex-boyfriend, Adnan Masud Syed, was found guilty of her murder in 2000 and was imprisoned for life, although he has always maintained his innocence. On the podcast, host and journalist Sarah Koenig tells listeners about her year long research of the trial and case, and what she found.
5. Here Be Monsters
This podcast is all about facing the unknown. Although the subjects vary, the episodes usually are segments about science, drugs, death, religion, politics, and medicine. When creator Jeff Entman originally conceived the show he said that it was a series of "documentaries about things I'm afraid of".
6. Lore
Lore is a podcast about the frightening history behind common folklore. It delves into the roots of typical myths and legends like vampires and werewolves and tells of real life scary stories from all points of history.
7. Put Your Hands Together
This podcast, co-hosted by wives and comedians Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher, is an assortment of stand up routines by a multitude of guests each episode. They record live sets and backstage interviews and turn them into a hilarious and very entertaining podcast.
