As we begin this new semester, boys' spring recruitment is upon us. And with boys' rush comes new pledge classes, which means new pledge drivers! Throughout my college career I have seen (and heard) of some awful things that these drivers have been put through. So after talking with one of my best guy friends, I have come up with a basic list of dos and don'ts.
1. Don’t call them pledges
I really love the new rule that allows sorority girls to become new member educators for their favorite fraternities! Oh wait… that’s not a thing! Also, just because your boyfriend is in a certain frat does not give you associated power to boss them around. Be kind to your driver because who knows? They may remember you as being super cool and next time they drive you may get moved up on the list! Besides, not all drivers are freshmen and you wouldn’t want to insult a member, would you?
2. Don’t get a pledge driver from frat A to take you to frat B
This one kills me and it also kills me that more drivers don’t deny this request. While I’d like to think that more girls would have more common sense than this, sadly some don’t. I mean come on ladies… it's rude! You're basically saying “I know you’re having a party that you want people to come to but like I heard that this other party is better so will you take me there?” No. Stop.
3. Don’t lie about how many people you have/tell them one number and then walk up to the car with 70
I mean honestly I don’t see what the point is in lying about the number people you have because when your driver shows up in a Honda civic and you have 9 people then you’re gonna be the one that has to suffer through having your sisters bony butt in your lap. Or you’ll be the one sitting on your sisters lap, hitting your head on the roof of the car every time you hit a bump.
4. Don’t call/text them 15 times…they’re coming
Let's say your friend asks you to come get them to take them to a party. While you’re driving to pick them up they proceed to call/ text you repeatedly asking “Where are you?” “How long until you’re here?” Would you like that? I’m gonna say probably not. So cool your jets, you’ll be reunited with your favorite frat-stars soon enough! (side note: I know guys that say if you commit this act, they will move you down the list)
5. If you get another ride, call and tell them
It amazes me that I even have to say this.
6. If you demand that they take you to Taco bell/McDonald's, you should offer to get them something
This one is a personal must for me. Usually when you’re trying to get a ride home at the end of the night, it's rush hour for the drivers, so if one of these kind souls agrees to take you to get your late night grub on you should offer to get them some food, too. They’ve been in a car all night dealing with drunk people, they’re probably hungry! Even if they say no, you offered.
7. Don’t be rude
This is a basic life rule that everyone should follow but sadly not all do. If you’re nice to people, then 98% of the time then you’re gonna get nice back.
