People are always saying how I have it easy because my major seems like it's a breeze. Well, I hate to break it to you, but my major can be very challenging at times. I understand that Media and Communication might not seem hard, but in reality, communication majors require a large knowledge on many different areas.
Here's the thing, every major is challenging. Each major has a set of skills that have to be mastered in order to succeed. Pre-med and pharmacy majors have to have an understanding of multiple types of science, not to mention the huge dedication and commitment to getting through the many years of schooling that follows undergraduate. Education majors have to be able to work with kids of all ages and have an understanding of many different subjects. Communication majors have to obtain a different type of skill set. We have to master several different types of writing, hone our public speaking skills, be able to understand and produce media in different forms, along with a multitude of other skills.
I understand that many people still believe that majors rooted heavily in science may present more of a challenge, and it may seem like that. As a person who was intent on becoming a pediatrician, I am fully aware of the classes and standards that a pre-med major is responsible for. However at the same time, while pre-med majors have practicals and such, communication majors have internships. Internships in a communication major can make or break getting a job in the future.
In the end, I just want people to understand that each major presents its own challenges. It's hard not to respond whenever someone says that communication is easy and it's a major for the slacker. But I know that it's a major that I love and it's a lot of hard work invested in my future.
