I consume music manically. After finding a great new song, I will listen to it for days on days repeatedly until my mind just zones out when I'm listening to it. I run out of new music to listen to and have to resort to the meaningless crap on the radio. I literally run through bands with brilliant lyrics and strong messages. To me, music adds an extra dimension to poetry, if used correctly. So here is essentially a playlist of songs I to listen to when all your music seems boring. All these songs are catchy and way better than listening to radio hits.
1. Anything from the 1975
I've written quite a few articles about them now because sadly I'm obsessed. And you will be too! There are so few bands who know so much about music and do so much of it themselves. If you look at their credits on their albums or singles, its written and produced by them through their independent label, Dirty Hits. Sorry, I'll stop now.
Catchy songs to start out with:
"The Sound" (you've probably heard this somewhere- Volkswagen commercial?- but didnt know who it was by)
"Somebody Else" (personal favorite)
"UGH!" (not that wierd considering their second album title is "i like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it")
"Girls", and "Robbers."
They won a Brit award for Best Group 2017!!
2. Marina and the Diamonds
Ah, my first concert and my gateway music artist. Before listening to her music, I would never really listen to music for its lyrics, but rather for its catchy tune and how something sounded. Now I listen to both and its all thanks to:
"I am not a robot"
"Teen Idle" - perfectly captures the teen angst of a female teen
"Oh No!" - greed and materialism
"State of Dreaming" - "i live my life inside a dream"
Honestly, all her songs are catchy and easy to sing along to.
3. "There's a Honey" by Pale Waves
Very catchy and beautiful song about worrying that you love someone more than they would ever want or love you. Plus, it sounds like a 1975 song (probably because the 1975 produced it and Pale Waves is signed to Dirty Hits).
4. Anything other than Maroon 5
Masquerading as a band that is literally just Adam Levine. I cant name any other members sorry. I mean have you ever heard someone say: "omg I love Maroon 5!" Their passive and neutral music just doesn't inspire any emotion.
Also guilty for masquerading as a band but produces nothing but generic, boring Top 40 pop music.
5. "home" by morgxn
If you love a great beat, catchy tune, and a smooth voice, this is the perfect song. Whenever I'm homesick I listen to this, and can literally relate so much, but it is not a sad song.
6. Sweet Disaster by DREAMERS
If you love rock music (or if you don't) you'll love this guitar beat driven song. I have no idea what the message is, but I think it might be something along the lines of YOLO. Which I can relate to.
7. "Quiet Little Voices" by We Were Promised Jetpacks
Another great band with a guitar driven background.
8. "Loudspeaker" by MUNA
As I write this, they're actually performing at Brighton Music Hall in Boston near me. Too bad I didn't find out till today...
Anyways, if you love electronic music with a solid beat from a strong girl group, MUNA is what you're looking for. Their music is really easy to sing along to and super beautiful!
