Contrary to popular belief, Long Island has great food aside from pizza and bagels--especially in Suffolk County. Take this as a guide to the best restaurants around (and some of my personal favorites).
1. Mario's, East Setauket

"The menu offers everything you would expect to find along with imaginative pasta and seafood dishes and an extensive wine list." I recommend all of their pasta.
2. Se-port, East Setauket

"We strive to serve our customers quality freshly prepared heros, homemade salads, a fine selection of hot food items, and of course, our renowned fresh brewed Se-Port iced tea. We are pleased to say that our customers have voted the Gasm hero the most talked about sandwich of the year award in The Pulse magazine." The Gasm is as good as they say.
3. Kumo, Smithtown

Kumo is a Japanese steakhouse where they serve hibachi, sashimi, sushi, and everything in between. The food is great, and it has a fusion bar vibe.
4. Little Vincent's Pizza, Huntington

"The cold cheese slice is heavy in every sense of the word, but Little V's New York-style pizza is more than sturdy enough to handle the weight."
5. Claudio's, Greenport

Claudio's is a water-front restaurant that serves fresh seafood. They serve lobsters in an array of ways, one being stuffed, like the one above.
6. Toast, Port Jefferson

"Toast Coffeehouse is an innovative breakfast and lunch eatery with and artistic vibe located in the Village of Port Jefferson and the Patchogue Village area. Additionally, [they] have tapas, fondue, cheese plates, eclectic wines, craft beer and homemade
desserts on Friday and Saturday nights only in Port Jefferson."
7. Z-Pita, Port Jefferson

"The best Greek restaurant in town. Take out or sit inside Joey Z will make sure you are content. Delicious food all the way around. Cozy and friendly atmosphere. Variety is the spice of life. Large portions, nice wines, excellent service." I recommend the gyro salad.
8. The Modern Snack Bar, Riverhead

"From a
humble beginning of short orders and milk shakes, the Modern Snack Bar has grown in size and popularity through the years. [They] still have great burgers and sandwiches. Today, [their] menu includes such East End favorites as Roast L.I. Duck, Fresh Flounder, and [their] famous Lobster Salad." They also have fresh baked pies.
9. Don Quixote, Miller Place

This is the best Mexican I've ever had and great drinks. The service is great, too.
10. Branchinelli's, Hauppauge

“I just had Branchinelli's yesterday and I'm going to be thinking about it until I can make up an excuse to go back to Long Island for more.” This is another amazing
Italian place.
11. Rockin' Fish, Northport

"Rockin' Fish offers a mix of fresh seafood as well as creative sandwiches, salads, burgers and of course fresh oysters."
Happy eating!
