Imagine being a young child once again and fantasizing about your favorite cartoon show. Within this show, you imagine what it would be like for those characters to be real. Maybe you would like to meet them in real life or you would like to grasp a certain item that they constantly use. Although this childhood hope may be physically impossible to achieve, Marco Bongiorno chose to make it happen.
Bongiorno is a member of a builders club that is dedicated to making a replica of the Pizza Planet truck from the Toy Story franchise. Pizza Planet, a pizza franchise within the world of Toy Story, has an iconic delivery truck that can be seen throughout Toy Story as well as multiple other Disney and Pixar movies. Starting with a normal truck, Bongiorno and the other builders decided that the Pizza Planet truck would be the big build that they were looking to create.
How long have you all been building and designing the truck? Also, where have you all been building it?
"The truck is based out of Southern California and has been worked on over the past six years. The main portion of the process, purchase, painting, TLC, was completed within a year, but since then, the addition of details has not stopped."
How many people have been involved in the process?
"It has varied over the years based on people's schedules. When we started, we had a larger group working on it. These days, there are about four or five people who chip in on the details and drive to events."
Is it completely finished or are you all still working on it?
"There's plenty of tinkering, both out of fun (when it comes to the additional details) and necessity (when portions of the undercarriage come loose). Each time the truck receives a once over, missed details are noticed and are quickly fixed or adjusted. Recently, we have been working on upgrading updated designs for the rooftop rocket."
What is the end goal for the truck?
"There really isn't an end goal for the truck. Since the project started, the 'Cross Country Road Trip' idea has been tossed around. The only obstacles with that plan is finding time to cruise across the country and making sure that the truck can handle all of that mileage. A few engine repairs have been performed recently that have inched the truck closer to a road trip ready condition. There are a few shorter trips planned for this year that would be test cruises to make sure the engine is prepared for a longer trip."
Why Pizza Planet? What made you all interested in recreating a truck from the Toy Story franchise?
"The project started right around the time that Toy Story 3 came out. The more it was discussed, the more it became clear that Toy Story was a major influence in everyone's childhood. Plus, who doesn't love pizza?
Are there any events that you would like to take the truck to?
"The truck cruises to a variety of events ranging from local car shows and parades to special events, some of which we can't even post about. Any event that gives us a chance to talk with other creative folks who have worked on their own projects are exciting to attend. Driving around in general is a treat since passing motorists enjoy seeing the Pizza Planet Truck in the next lane."
