Many times people claim that the key in life is balance. Focusing too much on one aspect of life will leave the other territories neglected. Alternatively, balance offers a variety of many areas in life. We often hear that finding an equilibrium between work and home, school and leisure, and even good and bad, are all important in achieving happiness. What also is a common place of advice is "take care of your health", often never specifying what kind.
Physical Health. This one is easy, right? Don't eat too much fast food, don't binge drink, exercise once in a while and so on. It's amazing so many people exclude this from their daily lives. The list of benefits of physical activity is never ending. To name a few, it can help your weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, and overall just make you feel good. Exercising can improve your mood and help you relax, despite the common distaste for actually going out and getting a good sweat.
Mental Health. So as long as I'm not crazy and don't have negative thoughts on a daily basis I'm good, right? Wrong. Mental health is so much more than that. Focusing on mental health can have the connotation of only being for those hippies who sit in a circle singing kumbaya and do yoga (although yoga is an excellent source to improve mental health). Learning to deal with stress and surrounding yourself with positive people is a big step in the right direction. Meditating and quieting your mind are also great tools to being mindful.
Social Health. Our favorite right? If you're going out on the weekend getting hammered with your BFFs that counts right? Not quite. Having a good social health is most important in times of need. Most people don't like to admit it, but we all need someone sometimes. And having meaningful relationships that are more than just good times is extremely valuable. Beyond the bad times, people are what makes the world interesting, and we should never lose touch with humanity completely because cynicism will follow.
So which one is most important? The answer is none, none take precedence. You can be the health freak who meditates but has no friends. You can be the hippie who has lots of friends but eats fast food every day. You can be the popular vegan who is actually depressed. Or you can be none of these. No one will ever have a perfect track record and everyone once in their life will make a few questionable choices, but the biggest thing is that we recognize the importance of our health and continue to juggle all the aspects, and keep the balance.
