"Sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory."
Capturing a moment is like building a piece of artwork. It takes time, patience, creativity and the right moments to make it all come together. Not everyone can create art; not everyone can be a photographer. It is more than just using a camera. It takes commitment, patience and skills to capture a moment. It takes a special person to be able to call themselves a true photographer.
I remember the first time I had my first special moment captured by a photographer. I was eight months pregnant and barely showing. However, with the help of my photographer, my belly looked as big as ever. It took a lot of sucking out, but in the end, my belly was noticeable. I couldn't just do that on any normal day. I wouldn't just do that on any normal day. That's what photography is for-- to capture a moment that one day you may vaguely remember. Fast forward to years later, and I won't remember myself looking barely pregnant. I will remember my belly big and round. I will remember everything I see in the moment that is captured in that photograph.
That is why photography will never go out of business. People want to remember special moments how they should be-- not always how they are.
Different people come with different stories. Crissy Greene, a Lafayette local and owner of Elle Design and Decor and Home Elements, values photographs more than the typical person. But, it is stories like hers that define the value of photography. Crissy struggled with fertility, similar to many women today. She took up fertility treatment, and it wan't until eight years into her marriage that she became pregnant.
"I used to beg God to let me be a mom; it's all I wanted in life."
Crissy got double the blessing when she realized she was pregnant with twins. Fast forward three years, and she is pregnant with her third child. It takes strength to battle fertility not knowing if your body could ever bear a child. However, when you have faith as small as a mustard seed, as she did, anything is possible.
"When I look back at those pictures, it reminds me that God's grace is a complete gift and a gift only God can give"
Crissy looks back at photos of the twins birth, their first birthday and the three of her children together, and she feels complete. In the moment that the photographs were taken, time was still--her babies were just babies, and they were real. She no longer had to dream of bearing a child because now she had three. Photographs represent her struggles--her struggle with fertility and her struggle with faith. She had a plan; however, in the end, God had a different plan. Photographs signify God's plan for her family versus the plan she had for herself.
So, why will photography never be out of business? Because in today's world, anything can happen, and we all want something to remember or be remembered by.
I can't put a price on photography. I would spend thousands of dollars just to capture moments of my son so that I could remember those moments for the rest of my life. One day, I will grow old, and he will grow old, and we will both forget. You cannot put a price on photography. It is priceless.
