Every day we lean to bend our necks,
To look and see if we got that post, picture, or text,
And when we lean we're looking away from our view,
Which should rightfully be me, it should rightfully be you.
Our phones have taught us to not talk to each other,
Unless we start off behind an internet buffer,
And this is not fair- I don't feel that it is right,
But I am also guilty so will this defer my amount of likes?
Think back to when our parents didn't even know this miss,
To them college was...college,
Not "say that!" or "post this!".
You can't say that we strayed,
And yes of course our technology is great,
But think about how there wasn't a wall that they could have hid behind,
As a constant phone screen in their face.
The encouragement says to look up,
To understand that you cannot set a filter to the world,
You should take in the color and message it radiates,
Without constantly, feverishly having to scroll.
Put your phone down and put your head up,
And talk to someone to hear their tone.
Hear the sound in their voice when they say your name,
And see what their actual smile looks like instead of that, all too common, frustrated and confused moan.
When I speak of this moan, I'm referring to the pit our stomach falls to when we don't get an automatic reply,
We deserve it right?
In terms of when we sent it, who to, and especially why?
We are so consumed by making sure we get that instant relief of attention,
From a little linger of online presence given by that special girl or that new guy.
We should be out enjoying our lives.
We shouldn't constantly look at a screen blank, and question if it will bring attention to our own leaps or dives.
Go out and have fun!
Seriously, do it, it will be grand!
I'm stressing this so much because I've been there, I am there, I will always be there,
In this new to the world, but not new to us born smack dab into the technology era, land!
Why do these things even matter,
They're simply so stagnant and dry.
If you are happy, sad, or spastic,
People should be there to not see and help, but to hear and respond to that type of cry.
Don't get me wrong- I am just as guilty as any,
And I won't fully ever stop sending, texting, calling, screening, posting, one too many.
I hope that I can always remind myself to put the technology down,
And when I do so- it might sound crazy- but I'll just simply stop and look around.
