The other day I was talking to my Mum about the differences between how friendships are in the modern day versus how friendships looked back in her day. She's not that old (Love you Mum), but I was amazed by how different things were. I was surprised to hear some of the things that she mentioned and even more surprised when I realised how nice it sounded compared to friendships in the current day. I feel like friendships today are virtual and don't require as much effort. These are only a few examples of the changes that have happened to friendships and how they have been transformed over the years...
1. Talking on the phone every day vs. Snapchat streaks
Before the fire icon next to someone's name was a sign of friendship, friends talked to each other on the phone all the time. My Mum told me she called her best friend every day and talked for hours instead just sending a quick snap selfie with a crazy filter. As much as I love Snapchat, talking on the phone to my friends each day sounds a lot more authentic.
2. Doing an activity vs. just taking photos of the activity
It's so weird to imagine going somewhere with a friend and actually doing the activity. If I go out to breakfast with a friend the majority of the time is spent taking photos of the food. If I go on a hike with someone the first reaction isn't to enjoy the view, but instead to get an artsy photo of the scene.
3. Talking for hours vs. Texting 24/7
Talking used to be a constant thing, meanwhile now texting is what's constant. I consider my close friends the people who I have continuous conversations with through my phone screen. My Mum considered her friends the people who she could sit with face to face and talk to hour after hour.
4. Handwritten cards and homemade birthday cakes vs. virtual birthday collages
This one made me really wish I lived in the past. I love getting cards and would prefer getting a homemade cake over a birthday collage/birthday insta post or a comment on my facebook timeline.
