There's been a lot of solemn, depressing news in the media lately. For many, these events have put on a serious damper on summer. Not to sound insensitive, but I think some cheering up is in order. What better way to turn that frown upside down than listening to some uplifting music? Here are a few albums perfect for improving your summer mood.
Car Seat Headrest - "Teens of Denial"
I discovered Car Seat Headrest from the lineup of Primavera Sound 2016. The band's name, as comical as it is random, caught my eye immediately. Their newest album, "Teens of Denial," is one of my favorite indie/alternative rock records released this year. Frontman Will Toledo is a quick-witted singer and songwriter who is equally capable of crafting a headbanger as he is a smooth indie jam. The album is full of nihilistic lyrics, apathetic vibes and teenage angst. Read Pitchfork's review of the album here. I couldn't stream the whole thing for you, but here's my favorite track via YouTube. Listen in and let out your inner outcast.
Magic City Hippies - "Hippie Castle EP"
I was introduced to this group by a friend I met while studying abroad. The band hails from Miami and categorizes their music as "indie funk." Regardless of what they call it, their entire first EP screams "summer," and I've been listening to it on the beach all week long. There's something about those clean drums and electro accents that puts a smile on my face. They also just released a sweet new single called "Hush," which means a full album is likely in the works.Chris Stapleton - "Traveller"
Those of you that know me also know that I'd never recommend a country artist, but Christ Stapleton is undeniably talented. He's written hit songs for George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Darius Rucker, Luke Bryan, Brad Paisley — basically everyone's favorite country superstars. In addition to being an amazing songwriter, his voice is incredible. After abandoning his position as frontman of The SteelDrivers, Stapleton released his debut album, "Traveller," in 2015. The record won him several awards, including a Grammy for the Best Country Album of the year. I think his version of George Jones's "Tennessee Whiskey" is to die for and perfect for a summer night of drinking.Chance the Rapper - "Coloring Book"
Chicago native Chance the Rapper has come a long way since "10 Day," his first mixtape dropped in 2012. "Coloring Book" is a glorious, jubilant record heavily influenced by both gospel music and his hometown's need for positive reinforcement. The album boasts an impressive list of collaborators, including Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign, Young Thug and Justin Bieber. It includes the hit single "Angels" as wells as a couple of my favorites, "Blessings" and "Smoke Break."Unknown Mortal Orchestra - "Multi-Love"
Creatively, Unknown Mortal Orchestra is one of my favorite bands out right now. Singer, guitarist and songwriter Ruban Nielson is a mad genius who's been producing amazing tracks since the band's first album dropped in 2011. Honestly, all three of their albums are well worth a listen. "Multi-Love" expands on the group's peculiar, psychedelic nature while cleaning up production and adding some soulful accents. Here are two tracks from the album that I'm still obsessed with, even though they came out over a year ago.
