It’s almost time for fall semester! Which means it’s almost time for classes -- and being outside of your house again, surrounded by thousands of people instead of the many blankets that have been keeping you warm during your six-hour naps. Oh, those happened? Yes, they did. And during this time where we all rediscover the meaning of sleep deprivation, it’s time for a pep talk. Brace yourselves. Kidding, it’s not like we’re all going skydiving, here. I’d like to do that at some point, but I digress.
There's no doubt about it. There has been a part of your life that you have found difficult. But past, present or future, you’re not alone during the times where you feel like you need someone to be there for you. Whether it’s finding peace without someone in your life anymore, moving on from the end of a relationship, recognizing your mere strength and dignity as an individual, or dealing with the dreaded uncertainty of your tomorrows, you need a support system. No matter the difficulty, there are certain things that you have to remember.
You are important. Yes, I’m talking to you. I know you may feel like you’re just on the side, and not really ready or worthy of any bit of spotlight or attention. But you are. Think about that dream that you have. When you’re fast asleep, and no one else is around or pressuring you, what is it then that you want to do? Do you believe that you can do it? You can. Don’t keep thinking that there is no way you can achieve any of the dreams that you have envisioned for yourself. Be aware of the value that you hold. And don’t be afraid to realize it and to work for something that you want, regardless of the fears that hold you back.
You, my friend, are special. You’re unlike anyone else. Your smile, your style (good or bad -- just kidding; I’m sure yours is awesome) your ideas, your taste in food (because we all know that is what matters) and your personality. If you’re like me, then you have a personality filled with an abundance of awkwardness. And that, too, is okay. Just because you are different doesn’t mean you are an outcast, or don’t belong. You do belong.
You’re a wonderfully spectacular human who has much to offer this world and much to offer yourself as you discover your passions and interests. And even during the times when you feel lost, life goes on and you’ll figure things out when the time is right. Not knowing what major to choose, what friends to choose, or what overall path to choose -- you never will know those things, and there is always going to be a bit of uncertainty in your life.
Think of it all like a movie. You start out watching and there are moments filled with such an intense amount of suspense. Do you just get up and leave? No! Sometimes the best acting in the entire film is shown there. Similarly, when you have trials in your life, sometimes that’s when you truly discover who you are, and what your character is. But you get through those times. You keep watching that film. Because right around the corner, unexpectedly, something great happens.
Your life is something that’s beautiful. Remember, regardless or where you’re at in it, that you are extraordinary. You’re capable, you’re worthy, you’re smart, and you are enough. If you’re going through hard times, know that you’re not alone, and that you have the capability to come out stronger and more ready than ever to experience the blissful moments of happiness that lie just ahead. Life is a journey, and although these magnificent and joyful times sometimes seem like they are a world away, they truthfully are often right in front of you.
So, don’t give up. Don’t give up on school, on life, on finding who you are. Don’t give up on yourself. You can do this. You can make it. And you can make it wonderfully. Hop on the motorcycle that I got this summer with me and let’s all ride through this distinctively incredible experience together. Just kidding, that was a lie. I don’t have a motorcycle. But my point is, look around you. Look at your friends and your family and the beauty in this life. Do you see it?
