At the end of May, Ireland will hold a public referendum in which its citizens will have the opportunity to repeal a law that makes abortion illegal. Ireland, which has been heavily influenced by the Catholic Church, has one of the strictest abortion laws in Europe. The last referendum in which the citizens of Ireland had a chance to voice their opinion about the issue was 35 years ago.
While abortion in certain circumstance may be legal, the life of the unborn fetus is placed over that of the woman forcing 10 women a day to travel abroad to receive the most basic form of health care. In many cases, these women have to hide their true intentions of leaving the country due to stigma and discrimination by society.
This violation against women's and girls' human rights and the need for a change in the law has created a #TogetherforYes campaign that is trying to win the popular vote in the next 6 weeks. Both men and women are finally standing up to the fact that women should be able to make their own choices regarding their own bodies without the involvement of anyone else.
As part of their campaign, they launched a crowdfunding page to raise 25,000€ in a week for posters. Within two hours of the campaign launching over 50,000€ were being raised and three days later the amount has surpassed 400,000€.
The incredible support has left people in Ireland speechless. While it is not yet clear, if the referendum will be successful in actually repealing the 8th Amendment, which makes abortion illegal, this is cause for hope.
