Hot on the heels of Burger King's black Halloween burger came Mickey D's "Modern China Burger." This burger features two pork patties, bacon, lettuce, and a yummy Sichuan pepper ketchup all held together with a mantou; or steamed bun.
The reactions of customers and food critics have ranged from horrified and dismayed to excited and impressed at the new menu addition. The more positive critics have referred to it as McDonald's new "silver" and "futuristic" burger while others have deemed it as sad and "gray."
Or, my personal favorite, as per Zen on twitter, the Modern China Burger is "the color of despair."
However, although there are those who admit to the Modern Burger's lack of physical appeal, many have reported that it is actually fairly tasty. Reviewers for Time Out Beijing called it "surprisingly palatable – kinda like Coldplay."
A spokeswoman for McDonald's China told reporters that black sesame seeds are what actually cause the bun's "gray tinge." So clearly it is nothing dangerous as some consumers have suggested.
After the green waste fiasco with Burger King's black Halloween burger, perhaps there was due cause for worry. But, as Grace said in her tweet, the limited edition burger was taken off the menu after November 3. So hopefully all those who wanted a walk on the exotic side got their chance. Perhaps the chain will bring it back sometime soon.
McDonald's China also added Black Sesame Soft Serve to their menu this year. Obviously, the ice cream turned out gray as well. And apparently it's incredibly cheap and if you buy one cone, the second is half price; it's made to share. It comes in a cool gray cone, as well. Yum.
Looks a little "cement-ish," no?
Unfortunately, neither of these delicacies are available in the States at the moment.
If they were, would you be up for an eccentric gray lunch? Personally, I think it might be worth a try.
