Earth is round; there is no evidence to suggest otherwise. This has been a know fact for a very long time, but there are still some people who are not willing to believe it. There are a lot of crazy theories out there, but it’s hard to imagine a person living in the year 2016 that doesn’t believe the Earth is round.
In the year 1959, a group was formed known as the International Modern Flat Earth Society, which believes that world governments have spread false information about the planet in attempt to replace religion with science. The group was founded by Samuel Shenton, who would lecture at youth groups and political conventions even after Sputnik was launched in 1957.
After Samuel Shenton’s death in 1971, the Flat Earth Society was disbanded. In 2009, the Flat Earth Society was resurrected by Daniel Shenton. At its peak, the Flat Earth society had around 3,500 members, and today has around 500. The fact that the society is shrinking is a good sign, but it’s disheartening to know that it’s still around at all. Various interviews can be found with Daniel Shenton and well as other "Flat-Earthers," and they are just as crazy as you might imagine. Shenton stated in an interview with The Guardian, “I haven’t taken this position just to be difficult. To look around, the world does appear to be flat, so I think it is incumbent on others to prove decisively that it isn’t. And I don’t think that burden of proof has been met yet."
It’s not just crazy people posting to blogs about conspiracy theories either; there are a handful of famous people who believe that the Earth is flat. The rapper B.o.B stated in January that he believed the Earth was flat. He posted many pictures of the Earth from high altitudes, and expressed that it does not make sense that he could not see the curve of the planet. The idea that high-profile people are trying to spread these false ideas is a little disappointing. Most people will listen to what B.o.B has to say and dismiss it, but there will still be people who believe him.
There are a lot of crazy theories out there, and it seems
that no matter how much evidence there is to support a certain fact, people
will still find a way to dismiss simple truths. Those who believe the Earth is
flat may not necessarily be bad people, but websites and individuals with
extreme ideas have convinced them to believe in an extremely outdated idea. It’s
important that we don’t let ourselves be tricked by false information, because
even the most ridiculous idea can be sold as truth.
