What is the purpose of the traffic light? Traffic lights tell drivers to go, slow down, and stop. Traffic lights tell pedestrians to go and wait. However, there is a problem. Pedestrians still walk on the crosswalk even though the traffic light says that drivers can go while pedestrians must wait. This puts drivers at risk because if the driver hits the pedestrian, the driver will always be at fault even though it is the pedestrian's fault.
One reason why pedestrians walk carelessly and selfishly on the crosswalk is that they want to get to a location quickly. They do not want to waste time and miss important information. Tardiness scares pedestrians because they will get reprimanded or written up for their tardiness. They can also get zeros as a grade for the day at school or college. They can even get fired from work as well. However, life is more important than being on time. Pedestrians can redo being on time, but they cannot redo a life. From this fact, pedestrians should take their time when crossing the crosswalk regardless of lateness.
Another reason why pedestrians walk carelessly and selfishly on the crosswalk is because of freedom. Cars must always stop for them regardless of who is supposed to go first. They are also aware that it is always the driver's fault if the driver hits them. When drivers get charged for hitting the pedestrian, they have to give money away to the pedestrian. Some pedestrians find risking their lives on the crosswalk as an opportunity to get money. One important thing pedestrians need to keep in mind is that they cannot use the money after they are dead from the car crash.
Pedestrians will never understand what drivers go through after they are charged for the accident. The amount of money that drivers must give away for the accident will lead to financial problems. Drivers must work hard to gain their money back. Not only do they lose money, but they also lose their sanity. Drivers will keep blaming themselves day by day. They will be sad and scared for the rest of their life. They do not want to drive again. They will also have drama with the pedestrians' families. They will even be seen as a murderer even though they did not purposely kill the pedestrians. Drivers do not deserve a miserable life just for the pedestrians' carelessness and selfishness.
The matter is different in some foreign countries. Some foreign countries ban or illegalize pedestrians from walking on the crosswalk when cars are present on the road. Pedestrians must wait until the crosswalk is empty so that they can cross safely. If a car hits them, then it is always the pedestrian's fault. This ban or illegalization makes crossing the sidewalk and driving on the road safe for both pedestrians and drivers.
If you do not like pedestrians crossing on the sidewalk when the traffic light is green or when you are about to cross an unregulated crosswalk, then do not be those pedestrians to other drivers! Treat drivers the way you want to be treated as a driver! Be a good and considerate pedestrian!
