Passover is a very important holiday in the Jewish religion as Jews remember their ancestors' exodus from Egypt. Like other Jewish holidays celebrated throughout the year, Passover falls at a different time each year. This year, most Jewish college students are still in school during Passover. Some students are fortunate enough to be close to home and celebrate with their families and others can stay at school and take part in a Seder going on at their campus Hillel. Here are the ladies of "Orange Is The New Black" to show how college kids celebrate and observe Passover.
1. It is April and you get a package delivery notice to your dorm.
You never get packages and realize that it is from your synagogue supplying you with items that will remind you it is time for Passover. It is also perfect because they sent you free food when you were running out.
2. You call your parents asking if you need to be at the family Seder.
If they make you come home you tell them that you are upset about missing out on stuff going on at school. They then tell you that you can bring back as many home cooked matzah balls as you want.
3. If you are not able to make it home, Hillel will definitely provide you with a unique Passover experience.
You are getting free food and making new friends so how bad can it be? Maybe it will even be better than your six hour Seder at home.
4. Your non Jewish college friends will ask you what Passover is all about.
They are actually pretty interested in learning about it, including when they try to pronounce words like "hagadah" and "afikomen."
5. You might have friends even ask if they could try to celebrate with you because they want to cut out unleavened bread too as a part of their new diet or to show you some support.
6. It is already day three and you realize that the dining hall probably is not too accommodating for students keeping Passover.
7. Your friends all want to go out for pizza and you have to bring your own matzah pizza along.
You watch them stuff their faces with normal food that you wish you could eat but you pretend to enjoy your food just as much.
8. It is day six and you realize you have made it this far but all you want is pasta.
You are so conflicted but have to keep pushing through.
9. The holiday is now over.
You will be happy that you can eat normal food again and your friends will be excited that they do not have to hear you talk about how hard not eating "chametz" for over a week is.
