Passion Over Success

"If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins." - Benjamin Franklin

I'm three years overdue.

That thought crossed my mind as I walked out of my All-State flute audition my senior year of high school. Every year, I've spent the months of August through December relentlessly rehearsing for auditions in January. And every year, I've gotten the same result -- rejected.

Last year's audition was the worst, however. I had messed up on every single scale I was required to play. My first note had terrible tone and by the second half of the first scale, I had already fallen into an unsteady tempo. My hands and notes were shaky, and I knew the judges wouldn't take kindly to my acute lack of self-confidence.

When I was walking out the door, the judges gave me what sounded like a pity "thank you." It felt terrible to hear that from the people I had spent months preparing to impress.

After my audition, I teetered on the brink of a full-blown crying spell. My parents tried to console me, but all I could think about was how I had let myself down again. I thought again about why I had imploded during the audition.

Why do I do what I do even though I fail each time? Why do I continuously audition even though I doubt myself and know the audition will be a flop, just as the last time? The judges must have thought I was one of those students who only auditioned because it was required by their band director. But I wasn't that student. I was the student that had practiced and prepared for months because I knew that this is one of my biggest passions and it’s in-born for me to always try my hardest in things which I love.

I do what I do because I love music, I love playing the flute, and I love and respect myself enough to keep trying, and because sometimes sentiment is more important than winning, good spirit is more important than fame, and passion is more important than success.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
