Forty-nine human beings died and fifty-three more were injured due to a heinous, incomprehensible mass shooting. Those with a moral compass and the ability to accept and love others for who they are, find themselves searching for an answer. Why did this happen? How could this have happened? What policies could be changed to prevent this? Where can we put bag checks? Why was this man able to carry such weaponry with him? Why is there still so much hate? Haven’t we made progress?
Individuals are trying to comprehend the situation and find ways to prevent it from happening again. Although some people are coming from places of genuine concern, changing or arguing over gun policies is not going to solve this issue. Debating over policies takes the attention away from where it deserves to be, with the victims and their families.
The only way to help stop hate crimes is to actively speak up against people who spew anti-gay slurs, despite how quietly they say it. Speak up against those who are for banning gay marriage, even if they just signed a petition. Speak up against the individuals dehumanizing transgender issues, even if they just don't understand. Others beliefs, a way of life, self-expression, self-identity, religion, and everything about them is as equally important as yours. It is that simple.
The only way to ensure this bigoted idea that the transgender and gay community deserves less than others because they are ‘different’ needs to come to a complete halt immediately. They are not different, you simply do not understand. A majority of the people who ‘hate’ others need to be informed.
I commend all of those who face unwarranted hatred and bigotry while simultaneously holding your head high and biting your tongue. I commend those who remember their importance and truth despite the slander. I commend every single person who has felt belittled by someone else for something out of their control.
Just remember, that there are other people in the world who support you. Unfortunately, you may not hear or see it every day but it’s there. Not only do you have support from your fellow citizens, but you have international support as well.
Outside of the Admiral Duncan pub in London citizens gathered together in unity to show their condolences for the individuals lost and injured in the Orlando shooting. People sang, cheered, represented their pride and held a moment of silence in remembrance for those we lost.
When innocent lives have been lost due to a hatred generated from prolonged social ignorance it sends a message to the entire world. This message is that we have not done enough to protect the rights of our fellow people. We as a society have not put forth enough effort to generate acceptance, celebration and pride for those around us.
As a society in its entirety, it is imperative that we address the fact that there are people who are holding onto hatred against the gay community. It is only then, that we can address it, move forward and continue to make strides in the right direction.
