On May 21, 2015, Richard and Mercedes Cushworth welcomed their baby boy Moses into the world. For three months they fed him, clothed him, and gave him all the love they could. There was one problem though; this wasn't their son.
Mr. and Mrs. Cushworth were a little skeptic when the hospital in El Salvador handed them a baby boy that had a darker skin tone than they did, but trusted the hospital records. As time went on, however, they began to see that the baby they had been raising wasn't really theirs.
Immediately, the heartbroken family blamed gynecologist Alejandro Guidos, who delivered their son. Since human and child trafficking is big in that part of the world, the family assumed Guidos had a plan to switch their son with a darker baby and sell him to traffickers.
Before a TV appearance, and before the Cushworths knew the truth about their son, Mrs. Cushworth had something to say to Guidos. As the gynecologist was walking through a crowd of cameras wearing a hood to cover his face, Mrs. Cushworth can be seen trying to rip off his covering and is screaming at him "Doctor, where is my son?!"
As it would turn out, their son was not sold into trafficking after all. The hospital regrettably admitted to mixing up the Cushworth's baby with another boy born on May 21. While the families are happy to have their children back, the doctors in El Salvador are outraged that they were accused of such a horrific crime and demand an apology from the family.
Dr. Alejandro Guidos is more than upset, though. He stated that he has nothing to prove because he is innocent and the DNA test the parents took proved he didn't sell their baby, but merely swapped him with another. He also claimed that an apology from the family will not be enough. Dr. Guido is still under investigation for mixing up the two infants.
"My heart belongs to my son," said Moses' mother Mercedes. "We have joy and gladness in this house. Praise God, our prayers have been answered."
The couple decided to name their son Moses after the Biblical character who was hidden for three months because Jewish babies were being executed, but was eventually found, according to the Bible.
"There are no words to express what our heart feels to have our baby at home! Thanks to all who joined our pain and fed our hope."
Best of luck to the Cushworth family, and the family of the other little boy who was mixed up! Hopefully the hospital in El Salvador can keep its records straight from here on out.
