Two weeks ago my family and I visited Disney's Animal Kingdom. Looking to try something new, we stopped in Pandora for lunch. Satu'li Canteen offered up unforgettable meals and is 100% worth checking out during your next trip. Here are 4 reasons I fell in love with this theme park eatery.
1. The authentic setting.
Pandora is the recently-opened "Avatar" themed attraction which boasts amazing landscaping so real it seems as if you are immersed in the alien world from the record-breaking movie. This area of the park showcases the Satu'li Canteen restaurant.
Satu'li Canteen blends the setting of both the native people, the Na'vi, and the foreign human soldiers who set up a military base on Pandora for the Resources Development Administration (RDA). The restaurant is a former mess hall, but, after losing the war, was abandoned and reclaimed by nature as one can see when they sit down at a table. The trees act as support beams while beadwork and natural lighting enhance the organic feel of the wild so central to Animal Kingdom.
2. Healthy food options.
Unlike most theme park restaurants, Satu'li Canteen offers healthy food rather than the predictable fried chicken and fries combo. Here, guests' palates are also transported to another world. I chose to get one of their signature bowls. Guests are able to build their meal from a list of options starting with the base. I chose the red and sweet potato hash which is seasoned and includes red peppers, but there were also options for a salad, rice, or a quinoa and greens base. Next, the protein is added as either fish, tofu, beef, or chicken. Last, the sauce, either chimichurri, creamy herb, or black bean vinaigrette, is drizzled on top. In the end, my delicious lunch consisted of potato hash with chicken and creamy herb dressing. It was filling and very flavorful!
3. The unconventional takes on American food.
My dad opted for the romaine and kale salad base with sliced beef and creamy herb dressing. He said the beef was cooked perfectly and the lettuce was fresh. My brother, not much of an adventurous eater, went for something more familiar on the menu – Cheeseburgers. Well, sort of. Satu'li Canteen offers a weird and fun version of the classic American food.
Hamburger beef along with pickles, onions, cheese, ketchup, and mustard is pulverized then stuffed into a bao bun. Bao buns are bready dumpling-like rolls that look very otherworldly when advertised as "Cheeseburger Steamed Pods." It is served with house-made vegetable chips and coleslaw. He said it was good, but each bite basically tasted like a McDonald's hamburger with a lot of bread on the outside. There is also a curry vegetable option for vegetarians which sounds like it would taste a bit better than the cheeseburger pods.
4. Great options for kids (or adults who are young at heart).
Finally, my mom decided to order the Teylu dog. It is from the kid's menu so it comes with grapes, vegetable chips, and either bottled Dasani water or Nesquick chocolate milk. The Teylu dog, named after the grub, shrimp-like creature from the film, is a normal hot dog that is boiled then wrapped in sweet, fluffy Parker House dough. The all-beef hotdog was good, but average. The dough, however, really made the meal delicious and was a step up from a regular bun.
Pandora is a world waiting to be explored. The cuisine is truly alien and it is a blast to try all of the different combinations. I recommend the bowls as the best option for both value and taste. Take a trip to Disney's Animal Kingdom and discover Satu'li Canteen!
