Exploring Paleo Friendly Spots in Portland, Maine

My sisters and I took a day trip up to Portland Maine in honor of our oldest sister’s 30th birthday. She is our biggest inspiration and so we dedicated the day to her and did some of her favorite things. My sisters and I are all paleo so enjoying a day out takes some planning, but we always make it work and sometimes we leave a little room for play.

There is a funky spot located on Anderson Street called Urban Farms Fermentory. Kristyn, the birthday girl, found this place through Groupon a few years ago. Back then it was a tiny tasting room and they only served Kombucha and maybe one or two ciders. Kombucha is a fermented tea that is full of healthiness. Us paleo people really dig kombucha so obviously, this is our place to go. They recently expanded their tasting room to a full bar with their own booch, cider, and meads. So so so good. I recommend everyone goes and checks this place out. And for $5.00 for a flight of 5 how can you say no? They use in-season fruits, vegetables, and plants and the best part they forage all their own ingredients. You find your favorite and you buy a “growlah” to take home with you. Make sure you save your growlahs because you can bring them back to refill! The worst part about this place is picking which one is your favorite because they are all so good.

After our tasting, we made our way over to Bam Bam’s Bakery on Commercial Street. Bam Bam’s Bakery is a complete Gluten Free Bakery!! So Gluten Free isn’t exactly paleo friendly but we are not perfect! My sisters love desserts, pastries, and chocolates so this place was heaven for us! They even served Almond Milk Lattes which was gold for this dairy free chika over here! We each got a different treat and we all got an Almond Milk Maple Spiced Latte. Our treats consisted of a cinnamon roll, a peanut butter delight bar (I know peanuts are not paleo either, shhh) and a chocolate chip cookie dough delight bar. The chocolate chip cookie dough bar was the best one, unanimously chosen. With a shortbread like cookie on the bottom and chocolate chip cookie dough on top. If you are ever in Portland, regardless if you are Gluten Free or not you need to try Bam Bam’s goods. The fact that you could barely tell you were eating a Gluten Free product was worth every penny spent there.

Unfortunately, the day was a washout and it was raining for most of our time in Portland so we didn’t get to enjoy the outdoors. But as true Paleo followers and maybe a small effort to make up for our sugar filled day we ended with Chipotle Chicken bowls and you bet your ass I paid extra for guac.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
