Dear Professors, We Do More In College Than Just YOUR Class

I would gladly dive deep into your class if it wasn't for the time it takes to do really well.

I don't mean to be that person that whines and complains about how much school-work they have, but I am, and so is every college student. Yes, we like to complain to each other so we can all relate and essentially cope together. However, sometimes it turns into a competition of who got the least sleep, the least free time and the most caffeine that day.

As I'm sitting in Zane Showker Hall at JMU, I want to write about how ridiculous the amount of work has gotten. I've only been here a month, and yes, it is my junior year, but isn't three online assignments due by 11:59 pm on Sunday and a test and two quizzes on that upcoming Monday a little much?

Yes, we've had all weekend to study, but there are other factors in our life that can get in the way of that.

Some of us have to work to help pay for college.

Some play sports.

Some have an authority position in a club/organization.

Some are sick and can barely get out of bed — which means, they can barely even try to get work done.

Some people's families come to visit.

And once in a while, we'd like to enjoy our weekend.

So this is a plea to the professors to give us a little break. Your class is not our only class. You always say that you know that we handle 12-17 credits usually, yet, you keep tacking on more work that there is not nearly enough time in the world to finish.

We love our major classes especially, trust me, I did miss the work during summer (believe it or not), but college is literally a full-time job. I've been questioned how I work while in college and still find time to attempt to participate in clubs and still go out and have fun.

My accounting professor, the other day, said at most he worked 8 hours a week because he couldn't do his school-work load and work at the same time. I know it isn't impossible, but it feels like it when you wake up at 6 a.m. and don't get off until 9 p.m., for example.

Our professors are getting us ready for the "real-world" and deserve a lot of credit (well, most do anyway). So, do not take this as any disrespect, but we have more than just your class. I would gladly dive deep into your class if it wasn't for the time it takes to do really well.

Balancing your work and life is difficult and time can be hard to find, but putting in the work will be worth it in the end. So students, since we cannot control our professors' loads of work, keep your head up, stay caffeinated, and achieve your goals.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
