Somehow, it’s already April and school is ending in about a month. Naturally, as the countdown to summer gets shorter, your to-do list keeps getting longer.
There’s so much to do in all of your classes and your parents tell you to prioritize, but you just don’t know how. You push back doing the reading once and pretty soon you’re so far behind that it’s 4:00 a.m. and you’re going strong on caffeine, two pages in your five-page paper while simultaneously trying to catch up on other neglected work.
It’s April and it’s going to be alright.
Remind yourself why you’re there. Remember why you’re studying and cramming. Pull an all-nighter to catch up, but then allow yourself to catch up on sleep. Reward yourself with days when you do nothing. It’s not wasting a day to allow yourself to breathe every once in a while.
Don’t feel like you always have to be doing something. We’re so involved that it’s difficult to remember that having time to yourself doesn’t mean that you’re lazy. Take care of yourself. Have fun with your friends. Not everything is so incredibly serious.
Being in college is great—we have infinite opportunities to learn and create ourselves. Every day, we get to choose to pursue the things that interest us. We can talk to people who make us think, who have different viewpoints or knowledge to share with us, and who challenge us to grow as people and intellectuals. We get to live with some of our best friends and to meet new people all around us who have similar goals and passions.
Soak up everything that surrounds you academically and socially. Do things just for fun. Go explore new places on the weekend and listen and really get to know the people around you. Most importantly, make sure that you never neglect yourself. If you need time alone, take it. If you need to go to bed before 10:00 p.m. because you’ve had a long day, do it. Take care of yourself and the rest will follow.
