A scenario: there is a large neighborhood in the middle of the piedmont area of North Carolina. The only trees to be seen are a few that run around the perimeter of the neighborhood and those that were planted by the homeowners. It’s 60-70 degrees outside, in November.
Climate change is happening. It’s been proven by science several times. It’s time the media stops giving us more proof that it exists and starts showing us why it exists and how we can make a difference. It’s time we all start giving a sh*t.
This world belongs to all of us, and just because it might not look like it’s happening to us, it is. The coasts are disappearing on the Eastern hemisphere, farms are destroyed by tsunamis and Greenland’s ice is melting as you read this. In America, the mindset seems to be out of sight and out of mind. Ridiculous, right? Because it might be out of sight for you, but in 50 to 100 years, when our future generations are growing up and having children, it won’t be out of sight for them. They’ll be caught right in the middle of it.
Say what you will about the cause of climate change, but the point is, humans are speeding up the process. Deforestation, commercial fishing and factory farming, poaching, because why stop now? We don’t have enough yet, right? This world is in our hands, and at this rate, that’s honestly scary. It is important to be educated on this matter, but it is also important to want to make a difference. Some people might say that if they’re the only one changing their lifestyle it won’t matter. That’s not the case at all. Every change starts with one person. It doesn’t even have to be a big change. You can seriously just start recycling more, or start buying products from companies that are nice to the environment (there’s a really cool app my mom uses basically every day of her life called Buycott and if you scan a bar-code it tells you if it’s a company you’re avoiding). Change has to start somewhere.
It is important to know about what’s happening to our environment. Yes, even if we live in America and we’re talking about Kenya or Japan or Mauritius. It doesn’t matter if we don’t live in the same place, because we are all part of the same race and we all live on the same f*cking planet. Care about the world you live in. Or the generations to come are going to be S.O.L., just because we didn’t try to make a difference today.
