The Oscars is one of those award shows where we, the audience, watch our favorite actresses and actors win a bald-headed gold statue for their work in a motion picture film. We also discover that sound mixing is a category for which you can win an award. Since the nominee list came out on Thursday, there has been a lot of buzz over who deserved the statue and who did not. Many articles turned it into a racial ordeal calling the Oscars "too white" because of all of the ethnic films that came out last year that were, in my opinion, really good. Of course, there were some nominees who did not deserve a nomination, but for others, the movies worked in their favor. Here are just some of the nominees who got it and did not need it, and some who should have it but were snubbed.
1. Best Actor
Surprise: Micheal Fassbender
I was surprised that he was nominated! I really enjoy his acting and I am glad the academy recognized him again this year.
Snub: Micheal B. Jordan and Idris Elba
These two did a great job in their movies. The way they embodied the characters was perfect. According to the academy, however, they were not good enough.
2. Best Actress
Surprise: Jennifer Lawrence
Not really a surprise they gave J. Law an Oscar; however, I did not think she deserved one this year. To each his own I guess.
Snub: Viola Davis
This woman is everything. Her acting is superb and she really deserves a little bit more recognition.
3. Best Motion Picture
Surprise: "Mad Max"
This movie was just weird, but weirdness seems to win in Hollywood.
Snub: "Beast of No Nation"
This was a very good film about a man stealing children to make them soldiers. This should have been in the best motion picture category, hands down.
4. Supporting Actor
Surprise: Sylvester Stallone
The simple fact that the Academy even thought he did a good job in this movie is surprising. I could not understand half of what he was saying. His babbling is probably what got him the nomination.
These are just a few that I thought were surprises and snubs. Of course, there is much more to this list, but these are the ones that stood out to me. There were a ton of great movies that were looked over for the same people who are nominated almost every year. I cannot wait to see what Chris Rock will say as he hosts the Oscars in February. It should be an entertaining show!
