10 Things You Know To Be True If You're From Orlando

Moving to Gainesville for college was a big changed of scenery coming from Orlando. Gainesville is a small town setting where the population is mostly college students while Orlando is a pretty big tourist trap city. The move has definitely brought to light a lot of things about Orlando that I didn't notice until I left. As more time has passed, the more I noticed that there are certain things that everyone in Orlando knows/does on a day to day basis.

1. Theme parks are essentially free entry.

If you pay to get into Disney or Universal or SeaWorld, you're not a real Orlandoan. Most people who are from Orlando or have lived there for years either have friends or family members that can get them to pretty much any theme park for free. I don't think I've ever paid to go to Disney.

2. Avoiding I-4 at all times.

For those who aren't from Orlando, there is no way to explain this in a way that you'll understand the severity of the situation but I-4 is hands down the worst way to get anywhere. I'm almost positive it's the most congested and dangerous highway in the whole world. But all jokes aside, no matter how many times you drive on it, you never really get used to it.

3. We pretty much only use slang to communicate.

I saw a tweet the other girl where a girl from South Florida said she's never heard the word "addy." To me that came as a complete shock because I practically never hear the word "address" anymore. This goes for lots of slang like "green", "getty", "sleep" and "slide."

4. Repping our area code is a thing.

Every Orlandoan reps the "407" with pride. It's in Twitter bios, Instagram bios and even tattoos. #407TillWeDie.

5. Avoid the outlet malls at all costs.

We have two major outlet malls in Orlando and there is NEVER, and I mean never, a time of year when they aren't both ridiculously packed. So you can only imagine the chaos that is Black Friday and the days leading up to Christmas. Every Orlandoan knows not to hit up the outlets unless it's early in the morning or they're mentally prepared to spend at least half an hour looking for parking.

6. Seeing people roll suitcases through the mall is the norm.

Orlando is such a tourist trap that people walk around rolling their suitcases on the ground. Don't fret, there's nothing dangerous in them, just hundreds of dollars worth of Guess, Aeropostale and Nike.

7. Disney College Program culture is 100% real.

If you meet college aged people in Orlando, they're probably college program. The college program is essentially an internship to get your foot in the door with the Walt Disney company. Almost every person I've met between the ages of 18 and 23 in Orlando outside of people I went to high school with, are college program people. And they are OBSESSED with Disney culture.

8. I-4 Eyesore.

Need I say more?

9. Fake IDs don't work on Wall Street.

If you're really from Orlando you know not to try your fake to get into Wall Street. Sometimes it works, but lets be real I've heard more cases of fake IDs getting confiscated on Wall Street than them actually working. Try your luck but don't say you weren't warned!

10. You don't see a car without an Orlando City sticker.

Orlando City is the pride and joy of Orlando since the Orlando Magic let us down more times than we can count. Everyone has that purple and yellow pride. Driving down the highway it's hard to find cars without OC magnets on the bumper.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
