An Open Letter To My Niece

Dear Sweet Girl,

First off, I love you more than you will ever know. When I first found out I was going to be an aunt, I was beyond excited. Then to find out it was going to be a girl was even better. Before you were born, I already knew that you were going to be spoiled beyond belief! The day you were born was one of the best days of my life ... your presence in my life has already made such an impact. I never knew I could love someone so tiny, so much.

I must warn you about your dad, I have known him for the past 21 years, and he won't let me date to this day, so the chances are that he will let you date is slim to none. Your dad will be your first love, he will take you to father-daughter dances, he will take you golfing (even though you'll probably hate it), he will take you to dinner just because and he will love you without hesitation. See the thing is your dad is one amazing man! Even when I was a little girl, he protected me from the simplest things, he was the best big brother a girl could ask for!

Your mother is amazing, she cared for you ever since the day she found out she was pregnant. To me, she has been a sister for the past seven years, and I am so lucky that she is my sister. She will be the one who you pick fights with, go on shopping trips with, the person whose advice you probably won't listen to at first but then realize she is right, and lastly she will always be your biggest cheerleader.

As for me, I can't wait to watch you grow up. I can't wait to watch you take your first steps, say your first words and laugh until you're crying. See the thing is, even though I am not your parent, I will protect you as if you were my own. When things get tough, I will be here. When you need advice on what color shoes go with what outfit, I will be here. When you need someone to go to the movies with, I will be here. When you need a good laugh, I will always be here.

I wish for you to have the confidence to face life's toughest struggles, the wisdom to know what is right and wrong, the heart to take risks, the spirit to turn anyone's day around, that you always keep your family close, you stay true to yourself and you never stop trying.

I am so proud to be your aunt and can't wait to watch you grow up!
