Scrolling through Tumblr one night, I came across a video about Alex Landau and his story. A story that I feel is still very much so relevant today.
Even though it happened over seven years ago, the act that was committed is still being executed today. His story showcases how crucial it is to inform your children and yourself of how the world perceives someone who's color is a shade other than white.
Alex Landau is an African American man, who was adopted and raised by white parents that taught him a fairytale reality. He was taught to believe skin color didn't matter. At 19, Alex was no longer color-blinded after the night Denver police officers pulled him over.
It was not only the night he lost his faith in the world, but nearly his life as well. The video above offers an insight of what happened that night of January 15, 2009 and how f***** up the world truly still is. The point of this video is to make you understand that you need to open your eyes to the truth and admit that racism is very much so alive today.
It does not matter if someone white raised you or adopted you, all people see is color. So, it is important that we teach young ones the truth and not paint this picture-perfect world that's far from the truth. Because even though Alex made it out alive, it does not mean the next will. Learning the hard way can be deadly sometimes. This night led Alex Landau to become an advocate for social justice.
