An Open Letter to My Future Daughter

Dear Future Daughter,

First off, I’d like to apologize for whatever state the world is in as you read this. When I was growing up, the world was in rough shape. Even as I write this, things seem to be going downhill, but my hope is, that by the time you read this, things are better. My generation inherited a world that was in desperate need of fixing, I pray that we managed to patch it up enough to allow the world to keep turning. But that’s not what I’m here to talk to you about.

I’m here to tell you that you are a powerful force of nature that can’t be stopped.

When I was a young girl, there were a lot of negative images of women in the media. I grew up uncomfortable in my own body and didn’t know how to fix it. As I grew up, I became less awkward (in my body, I’m still incredibly awkward socially) and learned to love myself. That is what you need to do. I know that I’ve probably told you this a million times, but it is more important to love you as you are than to try and be something you’re not. I would rather you be yourself rather than try to be what others think you are.

The world will do it’s best to tear you down. I want you to be a shining light in a sea of darkness. The world will try to put your light out and you need to glow brighter. Be a beacon for others around you, be a leader. Those who are intimidated by you will attempt to snuff out your kindness, and your compassion. Don’t let them.

You will face challenges that will force you into positions you’ve never been in before, but those hurdles are important. They shape you and allow you to grow into a person who can handle anything that is thrown your way. And I will always be here if you stumble, it’s my job, but it’s also my privilege. You never have to go at anything alone. There will come a time that you want to, and I’ll respect that. There was a moment I had to do things on my own, but my mother was always there for me, just like I will always be there for you.

There’s so much that I want to tell you, but I know I won’t get to everything. There’s no way that I can. I’m writing this as a college student; I don’t know what it’s like to be a mom. But I know that I had the best mom, the best dad, the best grandparents, the best siblings, and the best friend I could have ever asked for. Everything I’ve learned, I learned from them. I hope that I’m able to teach you all that I know, but I know that you will learn so much from others around you. Make those connections that will last a lifetime. There will be people who come into your life and don’t stay, and that’s fine. We all have those who come into our life for one purpose and one purpose only. They teach you something and that stays with you for the rest of your days. Be kind to those around you just for the reason of being kind.

I know that this letter is all over the place, but that’s my life at the moment. I’m running a million different directions and if you’re anything like me, you’re doing the same. I’m trying to fit as much information as I can into a small letter. It’s not possible to fit all of life’s lessons in one letter.

So I leave you with this.

I will always be here. I will always be someone you can lean on, and someone you can trust. There will be times when we feel like hate each other, but it’s only like that because we love each other. I will do anything for you, no matter the time, no matter where you are, I will always be there for you. I’m your biggest fan.

So look walk with confidence, speak with kindness, act with compassion, and love with all your heart.
Because kid, you’ll move mountains.

With all my love,

Mom

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
