An Open Letter To My Older Brother
Berna Bocekci

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize how little time I now spend with my brother. Being away at college and busy with schoolwork, internships, jobs, and life in general, I don't get a lot of time to stop and appreciate all the little things my older brother has done for me. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today. This one’s for you, older brother.

Dear older brother,

It’s me again, your annoying little sister. Except this time I’m not here to bother you about a question I demand an answer to. But rather, justify the love and appreciation I truly have for you. Being an older brother may seem like a full-time job, but I know you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Having you as my older brother means having my own bodyguard, best friend, ultimate playmate and awesome role model. Practically all of my childhood memories involve you by my side. We still share an infinite amount of memories together, but when we were younger I think you may have liked me more. Probably because I didn’t talk back and did everything you asked of me. You used to have no say when I followed you around all the time; you were basically forced to hang out with me, and I can honestly say I miss that. I miss using our imaginations to build couch forts and igloos in the backyard. If I could go back to us being little kids again, I would in a heartbeat.

Well, older brother, times have now changed and I’ve been lucky enough to see you pass through your awkward stage and make it to the successful adult you are today. Although we aren’t together every day like we once were, I know that nothing will ever change between us. Having you as my older brother has taught me to thoroughly enjoy Saturday morning cartoons, anime movies, Pokemon and is the reason for my inner tomboy.

You’ve taught me to never give up but to always work to the best of my ability. Without you, I wouldn’t be the young adult I am today. Without you, I truly believe I’d be lost in all aspects of my life. You are ultimately the person I aspire to be like as I find my true self throughout my college years. I wish to graduate and be half the person you are today, this way I know I’ll be doing something right.

Looking back, I now understand the reason for all that you have done for me. Although at the time, I might have hated you for it, it was to better me as a person, and I thank you for that. I thank you for all the effort and time you put into helping me with everything. I thank you for being unbelievably over protective; I’ll have to admit, it’s pretty cool having a personal bodyguard. Lastly, I thank you for being the inspiring individual you are.

Know that you’ll always be my first best friend. We have the greatest laughs together and I can always count on you. It’s a given that as we get older, our lives start to get busier but just know, older brother, I will always love you dearly. As we get older, promise me we won’t distance from one another because I can’t imagine life without you.

All in all, no matter where life takes us you’ll always be my older brother, and I will always be your little sister. I will forever love you infinitely.

Love,

Your Lil' Sis

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
