Dear Little Sister,
I remember the day you were born. I stayed up all night watching a "Scooby-Doo" marathon because I was so excited to meet you. I think this sentiment changed when you came home and I realized that I wasn't the center of attention anymore, but I was still pretty happy to have you around. You were like a new toy, except sometimes you got a little annoying because you were always crying and chewing on things.
As we got older, you weren't just a toy anymore -- you were my friend. I would make you be my student when we played school or make you do a fashion show with outfits that I designed when I wanted to be a fashion designer. I think we were pretty good companions. Even though I pretended to hate it when you wanted to have a sleepover in my bedroom because you were too scared to sleep in your own, or how I acted like I never wanted to have dance parties with you, I secretly loved having a best friend who lived in the same house as me and always wanted to play. But I couldn't let you know I felt that way. I had to be the cool older sister. I needed to teach you how to be cool, too.
Now we are older. I don't get to see you much, and with our busy lives, we only talk on the phone once in a blue moon. But when we are together, it's like nothing ever changed. Mom and Dad always used to tell us that there was going to be a day when we wouldn't be able to live without each other and that when we were apart, we were going to miss each other so much. I never believed them. But now I do. I miss our car rides, jamming out to whatever song comes on the radio, our coffee dates (that I always pay for -- you owe me a lot of money!!), our shopping sprees where you always tell me I look terrible even though I know I look fabulous, and most of all, our friendship. I really miss having a shoulder to cry on whenever I need it, someone to tell all of my secrets to, and someone to yell at whenever I need to let off steam.
I'm proud of how well you are doing without me. You've learned how to change the toilet paper in the bathroom when it runs out, and I hope you've learned to stop leaving empty yogurt containers in the car. You're doing so amazing in school, sports, and life, and even though I will always be the favorite child, I think Mom and Dad are starting to like you more and more each day. You're pretty cool now too, so I think I did a good job setting that example. I guess I can't take all of the credit, though. I know that it is tough to blossom into your own person, and I think you're doing a darn good job at it. Keep sticking to your guns, following your dreams, and being a good person. Always remember, good things come to those who wait.
I will always be there for you. Even when I seem like I'm in a bad mood, or I'm three thousand miles away, I will always be your sister, ready to catch you when you fall and have your back when you need it. I know you don't need me anymore because you're all grown up, but I will always be your big sister, ready to pay for your coffee and bust on your weird t-shirts when you need a little reminder as to who is boss.
Love always,
Your Big Sister.
