The Do's And Don't's Of Flying

Don't worry, everything will be okay.

Flying can be a scary thing if you're a first-time flyer. I know I was scared the first time I boarded an airplane. I was much younger at the time and I was flying all the way across the country to California. However, I am currently writing this while sitting on an airplane flying back to California, so I guess you could say I got over my fear.

Fear is a totally rational emotion that everyone feels, and no one should feel ashamed for being scared. It's the not knowing that I think scares people the most, so here are a few things to remember when flying to help get you prepared a little bit more.

1. Get to the airport an hour early.

There are a lot of things that need to get done before you step foot on that airplane. There's baggage check, security, finding your gate. All these things take time - time that you need to make sure you have.

2. Security sucks.

The line for security is going to be long, filled with a bunch of grumpy people who just want to go on with their days. Be prepared for random pat downs to make sure you don't have any prohibited materials.

3. Suitcases can't weigh more than 50 pounds.

The suitcases you plan on having in the under carriage of the plane cannot weigh more than 50 pounds. If they do, you have to pay extra. Be sure that if you are going on vacation, you leave room for any souvenirs you may bring home.

4. Check the gate multiple times.

The gate for your flight can change, so be sure to keep checking to make sure you are at the gate. The last thing you want is to miss your flight.

5. Don't wear jewelry.

Whatever you do, do not wear a ton of jewelry. Unless you are on a business trip and are meeting your clients right off the plane, keep it casual. You have to take off all the jewelry for security anyway so just do yourself and all the people there a favor and don't wear it.

6. Dress comfortably.

Again unless you have to dress up for business just keep it comfy. I am currently wearing sweat pants and a t-shirt with my sneakers. Don't be like Victoria Beckham who shows up at the airport looking like she's ready to walk down the red carpet.

7. Bring your ID.

Your ID is VERY important. You can not get on a plane without it. Hell, you can't get past security without it.

8. Take off and landing are the scariest parts

The take off is what used to scare me the most about the flight. The sudden change in speed might make you jump like it did for me, but trust me once you are in the air it doesn't even feel like you are moving. Depending on the pilot landing can either be very smooth or can be quite bumpy. You just need to remember that everything is okay.

9. Some turbulence is normal

Turbulence is normal. Don't expect the plane is going down with every little bump you feel. Once again, everything is okay.

10. You are only allowed one carry on item

Most airlines will allow one carry on item, such as a backpack, and one personal item, like a purse. I always use my volleyball backpack because it is small enough to not take up a lot of space, but it still allows me to bring my laptop and any sort of entertainment that I want. Remember that airlines have certain restrictions on how big the carry on can be so make sure to read the regulations before packing for your trip.

11. Finally, bring entertainment

Flying can be quite boring, especially if you are flying for hours on end. Make sure to bring books, or movies to watch on a laptop. Doing this will make the flight go by much faster.

Once you get over the initial scare of flying, it can be quite enjoyable. You could meet some very interesting people on the plane, and who knows maybe some day you'll be someone who loves flying.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
