College is the place where you’re supposed to figure out what you want in life. You have to choose a career path, gain experience through work and internships, and then, hopefully, get a job offer after college. Some people enter college knowing their major and some others do not. For those who do not know their major yet, do not stress. You are not alone.
I am now a second-semester sophomore and I still have not chosen a major. It will definitely be in the business field, but there are so many different paths that I could take. I could do finance, I could do a five-year accounting program, or I could pursue any of the other business majors. With this decision comes stress. I am surrounded by students who have wanted to be doctors since eighth grade and students who are destined to work on Wall Street after graduation. These people have known their majors since the beginning of freshman year and I’m almost halfway done with college and still unable to decide. I struggle to choose my class schedule, I continue to second-guess my interests, and, most importantly, I am afraid of choosing the wrong path.
Although these thoughts will remain in the back of mind until I declare a major, I have started to realize that I should not be worrying. College is all about self-discovery. It’s about finding your passions and what truly makes you happy. Self-discovery is a process and this process lasts longer for certain people, including me. In the meantime, all that we can do is be patient, continue to work hard in our classes, and enjoy every moment that we have in college.
One day, we will choose a major. It may be tomorrow or it may be in two months. We could change our minds or we could stick to our original paths. Either way, we will figure it out eventually.
