When I was in the fifth grade, my class got to write a letter to our future senior year-selves. I remember running through my front door when I got home from school that day, trying to find my mom to tell her all the cool things I had wrote to future me. Of course she sat down and listened to all the things I had hoped for and dreamed but when I told her "Momma I can't wait to be a senior so I can read my letter again."
What she told me has stuck with me ever since. "I know you can't wait; it's exciting to have that to look forward to, but don't wish your life away. You have a lot of time in between." Then I had no idea what she was talking about, now here I am almost twenty years old, and I finally understand what she meant that day.
We live in a world of wishes and " I can't wait for this" moments. We live for the big moments that may be a day, a month, or years away. When we live like this we will not only never be satisfied with our lives, but we will also never really be living.
When were 16 we wanted to be 18.
When you're in high school, you want to be in college.
In college, you want the semester to be over.
You want to find your soul mate.
We want to travel the world.
We want to graduate college, and find a job.
Then we want a better job.
We want to get married.
Then you want to have kids.
You want more money.
You wish and wish and wish for a better life.
But in the end what does that wishing do? Why can't we just go back to living in the moment? I'm not saying we should be excited for our futures; I wish I was out of college and teaching with a husband all the time. However, if we really want to live our lives to the fullest we have to love the time of our lives we are in. When you're in high school, you live for the Friday night football games and cruising with the windows down screaming your favorite songs with your best friends. In college quit saying "I can't wait to get married" or "I can't wait to graduate." Instead, live for 2am Taco Bell runs with your best friends and for the crazy adventures all over your college town.
Seize the day, this day, the one you are living right now. Remember how lucky you are for each and every day you are living and take advantage of all of the moments you are having right now, because I promise they'll be gone before you know it and you'll be wishing you could live them all over again.
Make the most of this life and the situations you live. "Don't Blink" because you have so much life right in front of you, and don't go wishing it away so soon.
