An Open Letter To My Roommate Going Abroad

Dear roommate,

As you take down the posters, pictures, tapestries, and lights, I can't help but think of all of the effort, failure, and laughs that went into putting them up. Nothing would stay up, everything was falling apart, and we compared the situation to our deteriorating GPAs and social lives. It's crazy to think that wasn't even four months ago. Now here we are, one semester of classes and Justin Bieber lyrics wiser. So as you prepare for your next adventure without me, there are some things that I should tell you, and thank you for.

Thank you for voluntarily living with me. Even though you weren't actually living in the same room as me and knew it would only be for four months, you still had to put up with mine and the rest of our suite's shenanigans day in and day out. While our stupid actions may have given you a few good laughs, you were always laughing with us, and not at us (I hope). You helped us get back on our feet after we fell, except when we physically fell, then you just laughed at us.

Thank you for always being my dinner date. Even when you were out of swipes at Frank and just used me to get food elsewhere, your company was always appreciated. And you made it look like I had friends, even if we were sitting in the back corner where no one could actually see us.

Thank you for always playing quality music. Who else would I have consistently and unashamedly listen to Justin Bieber, One Direction, The Weeknd, and Taylor Swift with? Better yet, who else would I have shared all the latest new on these artists with? Our countless jam sessions to Sorry will always be remembered, as will the promise to learn the dance to it.

Thank you for the little things. Whether it was the music, the food, the talks about boys, or the trips to and from the library, everything was turned into an adventure and usually ended in complaints about the cold or rain. Every little adventure somehow turned into what we thought to be a hilarious SnapChat story or Instagram post, with the rest of the world simply thinking we were crazy.

I am so glad I got to live in the same suite as you for the past four months. Even though they flew by, I have so many great memories, and some not so great (rats and termites). I am thankful for the opportunity to have gotten to know you better this year, even though it makes you going abroad that much sadder. I know you will have a great time, even though you'll have no one to sing Sorry with. Make good choices, continue being social, stay out of fights, follow the rules, and send us SnapChats of any and everything exciting. I might miss you.

Have fun and see you soon! Xoxo,

Your roommate

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
