An Open Letter To the Republican Party

It's no longer just about politics.

An Open Letter To the Republican Party

This has to stop. Now!

As someone who was raised Republican and left years ago largely due to the lack of empathy I saw in the party, I have come to expect you to fail to treat others with respect, but this... this is like nothing I've ever seen before.

It is one thing to have policy differences with opposing parties. That is natural, understandable, and can be done so in a respectful and honorable manner. I have seen this attitude from you at times in the past.

It is quite another thing, however, to outright attack the rights of others. An act that becomes even more disgusting when it is clearly being done in order to pander to bigoted minded voters.

Over the last year and a half, by allowing Donald Trump to become your presidential nominee, you have become nothing short of a hate group. It's not like you haven't had your chances to put an end to it either. You could have denounced him countless times and withdrawn your support. Instead, you have chosen the route of the spineless. Your indifference to his hateful message has given him license to speak ill of anyone he pleases.

It is bad enough that the majority of you have complied. That alone is detestable. But some of you have taken things a step further. Last week, in lieu of the leaked audio tape of Donald Trump admitting to sexual assault, many of you tried to downplay it as if it were not an issue worthy of discussing. This was followed by Rush Limbaugh, the mouthpiece of your party for the last few decades, condoning non-consensual sexual acts and openly mocking rape victims on his radio show. Not to be outdone though, a number of Trump supporters went so far as to suggest that women should lose their right to vote in order to usher in a Trump presidency!

This is beyond disgusting.

You have sold your soul in your thirst for power.

If a party cannot and will not respect the rights of others, it has no place in our political system. In this election cycle, you have legitimized hatred towards every minority group under the sun. This needs to end.

If you were a single political official, I would demand that you resign. Your toxic reach, however, goes far beyond any single set of constituents. With the world watching this election, your actions have a ripple effect across the entire globe.

With that being said, I am calling for you to disband. I am calling on you to walk away from the influence that you posses and allow respectable groups and individuals to take your place. If that means that your legitimate policy stances fail to be represented, so be it. Recognizing the dignity of others presupposes everything else. You have only yourself to blame for the delegitimization of your voice.

This goes beyond politics. This boils down to how we treat each other. This is about the quality of life we wish on others. This is about basic dignity that we should be extending to each other. So for the sake of humanity, it is long overdue that you disappear.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
