An Open Letter to Parents on Social Media and iPhones

Dear Parents on Social Media and iPhones,

As teenagers, we understand all this new and advanced technology is mind-blowing to you hardworking folks. However, I don’t get how using your phone and social media can be so complicated, because it is actually very simple when you think about it. Here are a few things you should know that seem like a daily struggle:

1. You can’t zoom in on Instagram.

2. Mom, if you text me, I definitely have your number save, so you don’t need to sign your name at the end of every single message. I love you too though!

3. You can be my friend on Facebook, but please don’t like all of my pictures and post on my wall. Sometimes it’s embarrassing but thanks for that extra like!

4. So there’s this thing called a “selfie” and it’s super easy. Once you open the camera, you just press the rotation button in the top right corner, and bam! — you have a beautiful angle of your double chin!

5. Yes, I am going to record every 10 seconds of my life on Snapchat. Don’t ask why, just let it happen.

6. If you want to add your high school friend on Facebook, just type their name in the search bar! Messaging them will just make your life harder. Wow, reunited and it feels so good. Isn’t social media great?!

7. #youprobablystilldontunderstand. A hashtag is used on Twitter and Instagram so when you click on it, you can see what other people are saying about that specific topic as well! Cool, right?

8. If you hold down the home button (the only real button on the iPhone), Siri will speak to you. But if you talk before Siri starts talking, she’ll get really confused. Just be patient because she really wants to try to understand what you’re saying.

9. If you want to make a status on Facebook every 10 minutes, that’s cool, or at least it used to be. We don’t need to know your location with every step you take.

10. What is iOS8? Better yet, do you even have iOS7? Well, it’s a software update and it will pop up on your phone automatically, telling you to upgrade. This will make your life better, faster, and easier to communicate, especially with your kids.

Those are just the basics of the new generation. If you have any other questions, feel free to keep bugging your kids about how to work your touch screen device.

Sincerely,

Your tech-savvy children

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
