Dear Region Rats,
Well what can I say, you’ve been there through it all. Through the Middle School stages filled with goth eyeliner and braces to the High School stages of drama, tears, and well…acne. We have been through every stage of our lives together so far and then, out of nowhere, we are in college and all we have is each other. To the few friends that took on college with me, I thank you. Thank you for comforting me through failing midterms or crying because I missed my first ever college class because the alarm failed to sound. Thank you for indulging in the 2 a.m. pizza purchase we all know we didn’t need but in that moment, could care less. I mean…it’s PIZZA. Thank you for being that piece of home we all greatly need when taking on our first months of “adulthood” and full time “responsibility.” Thank you for always showing up at my dorm at random times because it feels like it’s been too long since we’ve last seen each other…usually only two days but it feels like forever. In the short months we have been away, our friendships have grown so much stronger. You have all become my family away from my real family…my brothers and my sisters. From rekindling old friendships to strengthening present ones, I couldn’t imagine my college experience without any of you. College has truly been one of the most life changing and surprising experiences any of us will ever encounter and I cannot imagine it without any of you. There is no one I’d rather walk all the way across campus with just to get a solid meal, spend the unnecessary money at Urban Outfitters with because we need “retail therapy,” make 11 p.m. trips to Chipotle in a random friend’s car, try to decipher our Calculus teacher’s lessons when he barely speaks English, or take on a completely new town with completely new people other than you. We are over two months into college and every day we discover something new. We may think we have this whole “college” thing down, but we don’t and we might not ever, but I’m just glad I get to attempt to figure it out with all of you. Soon we won’t be a five-minute walk from each other, we will be a fifteen-minute drive. We won’t be able to run over in the middle of the night if one of us is in need or just wants to talk. I’m going to miss our day after stories about the night before and how crazy each and every day is here. No matter how chaotic this year becomes or how stressed we all get, we will always have each other…it’s a region thing. So thank you again for taking on this new life with me, I couldn’t attempt to avoid the freshman 15 or pass any of my classes without having all of you right by my side supporting me.
Sincerely,
your hometown friend.
