We know who we are. We’re the girls who never went to a high school dance. Or if we did, we left after 30 minutes. We’re the girls who never played a sport and never got excited about football season. We never had more than 1,000 friends on Facebook. We’re the girls who spent more time stressing about school and the future than boys and our hair.
It’s okay to not enjoy high school, contrary to popular belief. High school really isn’t all it’s chocked up to be. It’s a time where everybody is growing, changing, and learning. We see high school dramatized on TV, in movies, even on the news. It’s definitely not the best 4 years of our lives. We were awkward and sweaty and made some questionable fashion choices.
I never went to any wild parties, or ever had drunken nights where my parents drove me home. I never went to prom. Nobody ever asked me to go to a school dance.
I studied. I spent way too much time stressing out over homework and tests. I studied so much I never had time for my friends, and they never had time for me either. In the end, I just went with the flow and did all I could to get through the years, no matter how lonely I felt.
Maybe you, too, are like me. Maybe you had a big group of friends in your freshman year. Maybe your sophomore year, a few had left the group or stopped talking to you entirely. Maybe by junior year, you only talked to 5 or 6 people, and only hung out to study, and maybe by senior year you had 3 friends left and nobody had time to see each other (but you still loved them anyway.)
As more and more time passes, I think we realize just how ridiculous the standards are that we set for our high school experience. You don’t need a car. It’s okay to have your mom or dad pick you up and drop you off at school, even if you’re a junior or senior. You’re going to miss them one day. If you have a good relationship with your parents, be thankful. That’s not the case for everybody.
Believe me, nobody cares if you tell your mom “I love you” when you get out of her car and go to class.
High school isn’t necessarily a magical time; it’s just the starting point in our lives. There is so much more to life than just these 4 years we spend in high school. We still have college, grad school, traveling, moving, and so much more to do. If something bad happens in high school, whether it’s petty drama between your friends or something much worse, just remember that it won’t last forever. High school is such a short part of your life, and it would be such a shame to not stick around to see what happens next.
