An Open Letter To My Future Students

Dear Students,

I know I haven't met you yet, but I already can't wait to get to know you! I can't believe I'll be so lucky to have the opportunity to teach you. Before we meet, there are some things I want you to know:

I'm here for you.

I know sometimes it can seem like teachers don't actually care about their students, but I want you to know that I genuinely do. I'm still in school right now, but I'm already thinking about the day that I'll write your names on nametags and attach them to your desks. I'm already thinking about the day you walk into my classroom for the first time. I'm already thinking about the fact that, for that year, you'll be my responsibility. And, because of that, I want you to know that I'll be there for you, now, then, and forever.

You're special.

Ever since I was in fourth grade, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. Why? Because my own fourth-grade teacher made me, as well as every other student, feel special. I felt like I had a place and like I should be able to succeed. If I only teach you one thing, I want it to be that you are special. You're worth it and I'm so glad that I will have the pleasure of knowing you.

We'll have loads of fun.

I'm already dreaming up all of the fun activities we can do in our classroom to make the year unforgettable. I promise that you'll learn a lot, but you'll also laugh and sing while doing it. I want to teach you that learning is fun, so I'll do everything that I can for you to make you love coming to school every day.

I'll never forget you.

Even though I haven't met you yet, I already know that you're going to change my life. It's baffling to me that your education will be placed in my hands for an entire year and, because I'll have that opportunity, I'm going to run with it and take you and your learning as far as I can. I've seen the kinds of connections teachers can form with their students and I can't wait to meet you, get to know you, and see what amazing things you do. You can change the world and I'm already so proud of you.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
