Dear Resident,
I never thought I would be so lucky to be put in this wonderful position of being your Resident Assistant. When I was a freshman, I was close with one of my RAs and she made me realize how important an RA can actually be, especially my freshman year. When I finally got the courage to apply for the position I was scared because what if I wasn't good enough? What if I don't help you the way I'm supposed to? But I'm here now and I hope I am doing well.
I live in the same building as you, on the same floor. I listen to the same music as you, watch the same movies and go to the same classes. I am a student and a "typical college kid" just like you. I live the same life as you; I just also get to be your resource, your helper, your mentor, and your first ally all at the same time.
My job here is to help you succeed in college. My goal here is to watch you have a blast. I want to see you all sitting in the lounge watching TV together, and I want you to say hi to me every time I walk past your door. I want to hear about the times you go sledding in the laundry basket I told you to not use, and I want to see you scream down the hall that you got an A on the test that we stayed up late to study for. I want you to come say hi to me while I'm on duty and want you to ask if I like my job as your RA.
I don't want you to ever be afraid to come knocking on my door, whether it's 3 p.m. or 3 a.m. I don't want you to be afraid to ask me questions about classes or professors, or about where a specific classroom is. I don't want you to try hide that something is wrong, or that you're not OK, because I can only help you if you let me, together we can get through anything.
You have been the best resident ever. Thank you for being you. Thank you for coming to my programs. Thank you for telling me that you love my door tags, and thank you for interacting with my crazy bulletin boards. Thank you for keeping me company when I am on duty. Thank you for making me laugh and making me remember my freshman year. Thank you giving me a reason to be an RA, and thank you for following the rules that I am here to enforce.
You are the reason I am an RA and you are the reason that I love my job.
Sincerely,
Your RA.
